Green Lantern #8 — Grey Tone Cover, First 5700 A.D. Story (1961, CGC 7.5)

$275.00

The early Silver Age was not a modest era, and Green Lantern #8 shows it. Printed at the bottom of the cover, beneath a man in green fighting a giant lizard in the desert, DC's promise reads that this is the first of a series that will make comic book history.

The story, "The Challenge from 5700 A.D.!", sends John Broome and Gil Kane's Green Lantern into the far future. It's the first of a recurring run of time-displaced adventures, and it shows how comfortably the book blended superhero comics with the science fiction DC's editors loved.

For collectors, though, this one is about the cover. It's a grey-tone cover, one of DC's short-lived experiments in tonal shading, and Kane's composition gains an almost painted depth: the pink-scaled Gila monster, the white burst where two powers collide, Hal twisting in mid-air under a blood-orange sky.

A Very Fine- copy with off-white to white pages, certified by CGC. It's the kind of cover that makes a good case for framing a slab rather than filing it.
