Avengers #8 — First Kang the Conqueror (1964, CGC 4.5)

$295.00

Kang is a villain built out of a confession. In his first appearance he lands in the present, traps the Avengers, and then pauses to tell them his life story: a bored man of the year 3000 who had already played pharaoh in ancient Egypt as Rama-Tut, tried to go home, overshot by a millennium into a ruined 4000 A.D., and conquered it out of sheer superiority. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had invented a time traveler whose biography could loop back on itself, and Marvel spent the next sixty years taking them up on it with Immortus, Iron Lad, and a whole council of Kangs.

Kirby and Dick Ayers' cover is a lesson in staging. Kang stands with his back to us, faceless, while a wall of yellow energy holds the Avengers off. The captions do the rest: "Wait till you learn his surprising identity!!!" On the back, a 1964 ad promises that anyone who knows just twenty people can earn real money selling Christmas cards.

This copy is graded CGC 4.5 (Very Good+) with off-white to white pages, with a clean, bright presentation for the grade.

CGC certification #4788512016. Ships fully insured in a Gemini graded-comic mailer within one business day.
