Captain America had been back for exactly one issue when the Avengers sent him underground. In "The Invasion of the Lava Men!" a race living beneath the Earth's crust has found a growing, volatile "Living Rock" and begun pushing it toward the surface, and the newest Avenger, a man who'd spent twenty years frozen in ice, goes down with the team to meet them. Only Thor can cross the molten tunnels. The Hulk, gone from the team since issue #2, turns up anyway.
This is the Avengers in their first, most crowded form, and Kirby's cover packs in every one of them. Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man, the Wasp, Cap, Rick Jones and the Hulk all race toward a mob of Lava Men cranking a siege engine with a burning boulder in its cradle. Against that deep blue field, it's one of the most graphic covers of the early run.
This copy is graded CGC 5.5 (Fine-) with off-white to white pages, with rich, saturated cover color.
CGC certification #4788512014. Ships fully insured in a Gemini graded-comic mailer within one business day.
