Amazing Spider-Man #18 — First Ned Leeds (1964, CGC 7.5 Restored)

$395.00

Eighteen issues in, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko tried something no one else at the newsstand would have risked: they made their hero run. With Aunt May ill and no one else to care for her, Peter Parker decides Spider-Man cannot afford to get hurt. So when the Sandman comes through the city, he backs away, and New York, led by a gleeful J. Jonah Jameson, decides he has lost his nerve.

Ditko's cover is one of the boldest of the early run. Spider-Man crouches behind a splintered fence with his hand to his face, while the Sandman storms past in the background. The cover copy calls it "the story you never expected to read." For once, that was true.

The issue also introduces Ned Leeds, a Daily Bugle reporter who spent years at the edge of the panel before being unmasked, two decades later, as the Hobgoblin, a twist Marvel would eventually take back. And on the back cover, a small surprise for anyone who draws: a full-page Famous Artists Schools ad with Albert Dorne, looking for people who like to draw.

This copy carries CGC's purple Restored label: graded 7.5, Slight (B-1), with a small amount of color touch on the cover and cream to off-white pages. It shows the way a Very Fine- copy shows, at a price an unrestored copy at this grade could not match. Certification #4788512011.

Ships in a Gemini graded-comic mailer, fully insured, within one business day.
