In May of 1967, five Legionnaires without living parents got left behind on the one day built around having them.
“The Five Legion Orphans!” plays it for laughs on the cover — Superboy, Brainiac 5, Mon-El, Dream Girl, and Element Lad, zapped into toddlers as Superbaby, Element Infant, Dream Tot, Little Mon-El, and Baby Brainiac — but the premise is built quietly around the one thing the five of them share. It’s a very Silver Age way of handling something a little sadder than the gimmick lets on.
E. Nelson Bridwell scripts, with Curt Swan and George Klein on cover and interiors at the height of their Legion run. A Lana Lang and Legion backup by Otto Binder and George Papp rounds out the issue. The letters page carries its own small piece of comics history — a published letter from a young Mark Evanier, years before he became one of the field’s best-known writers and historians, and long before his decades as Jack Kirby’s studio assistant.
This copy grades CGC 9.2, Near Mint-, with cream to off-white pages. Late-1960s issues of Adventure Comics were read hard by the kids who bought them, and high-grade survivors from this stretch of the Legion run are genuinely uncommon.
